Hey guys

I've been looking into different apps to go with sketchup, and its all a bit overwhelming.

Do you have any experience with cs3 ex.? If I bought that, would I still need a rendering app. like Podium?  Is Maxwell Render worth the extra $$$? Is cs3 ex. worth it?

I'm mostly going to be doing Architectural renderings and models.

I value any advice you could give.

Thanks again and Happy Holidays

Pat, MAC or PC? I'm guessing that if you're looking into Podium, you're working on a PC. in which case you may want to look into indigo renderer: http://www.indigorenderer.com/joomla/

it's free, and it has a direct exporter plugin that supposedly works pretty well when going from SKP to indigo. I haven't used it before, but i've heard good things about it.

Maxwell produces some of the best looking images i've seen from any 3D rendering app but it's pricey. if i was going to spend money on something, but didn't have a bunch of cash, i'd probably go with Cinema 4D, based on what i've seen.

I have the regular version of CS3, not the extended one. and it works really well for the Architectural work we do. although the 3D texture editing capabilities look pretty cool.

PSD side note, we recently picked up a copy of a pretty cool texture creation plugin for PSD. you can check out our most recent episode of The Sketchup Show (#40) to see it in action.

You might also want to check out Kerkythea for photo-realistic renders.  I've been playing with it for a week or so and have been very impressed.  The software is free and includes a decent exporting plug in for sketchup.  Once you get the hang of things you can have a scene rendering in just a few minutes.  They have a really handy PDF on getting started that is geared toward sketchup users.  So at the very least you can take a look at that and see if you think it is worth your time.
