Hi Mike, have just seen the latest tutorial about making textures using Photoshop. 

I stumbled across a program a couple of years ago called Genetica that has a huge array of sample textures as well as the ability to make something from scratch. I purchased the full version, however there is also a free version called "Wood Workshop" which is also very useful.
