I would be interested, how the construction goes on:
1. How do you create the windows? Why don´t you use components and let them push the whole in the wall?
2. How do you manage multiple storages?
3. How do you create the roof?
Thank you for your excellent work
Tom
Tom,
thanks for the questions.
1) for windows, i'll either model full 3D windows from scratch, or download 3D windows from the 3D warehouse and edit them to fit the size opening i have in the model. a number of comapnies such as Marvin, Pella, Jeld-Wen and Anderson have uploaded their window collections. you can search for them by size or model number. The window components that are set up to cut out their own openings will only cut an opening in one surface. which makes it tough if you're modeling walls with thickness.
2) i'm not sure i understand what you mean by 'storages'
3) most of the time, i'll use the 'follow-me tool' to model the roof. we did a podcast showing how that process works (episode #6).

I would just like to point out that in the book 'Google SketchUp 6: Advanced Exercises ' there is a chapter called ' Nested Cutting Components - Any Wall Thickness ' which shows a neat little trick for setting up components to cut holes in walls with thickness.
Addendum. I've been playing around with both methods for doors and windows and it seems like they both have their place. I'm currently working on a model using a floor plan downloaded from the web and I particularly like Mike's method where the texture is projected onthe top of the walls and I can see exactly where the doors and windows are meant to be without using xray mode. Thanks again for the podcasts they are a fantastic source of helpful tips. Now I'm really looking forward to the SU6 version of the DVD which is now on my most wanted list.
Trevor.
